DEN 11 | Romania’s Renewable Energy Surge: A Market Entering Its Acceleration Phase
Romania’s emergence as one of Southeast Europe’s most dynamic clean-energy markets, combining a historically low-carbon electricity system with a rapidly expanding renewable sector. While hydropower and nuclear continue to provide a stable backbone, solar and wind capacities are accelerating, driven by competitive CfD auctions and strong investment pipelines.
The country’s energy transition, however, introduces new challenges: increasing wholesale price volatility, grid constraints, and the urgent need for large-scale storage and flexibility solutions. Policy support, such as the removal of double charging for storage, is helping address these bottlenecks, while domestic natural gas production ensures high supply security.
